Waterproof Futon Covers, Protectors, and More
Indoor and outdoor options to help protect your futon.
Over the years, we’ve been asked about waterproof futon covers over and over again. Here’s a quick guide to help you choose the right option for your space and budget.
Outdoor Use (Patios, Covered Areas, Sun & Moisture)
If your futon will see sunlight, rain, mist, or general outdoor moisture, choose an outdoor, water-resistant fabric. We carry Sunbrella, Sun & Shade, and Outdura futon covers. These repel water and resist sun fading. They’re highly water-resistant, but like any sewn cover, standing water can eventually work through fabric, seams, or zippers.

Indoor Use (Spills, Pets, Kids)
For indoor protection against spills or accidents, use a waterproof futon protector under your decorative cover. These are typically white, zippered encasements designed to keep liquids off the mattress. As with any zippered product, pooled liquid left for a long time can still seep through seams or the zipper area—wipe spills promptly for best results.

Vinyl Covers
Vinyl covers are waterproof and easy to wipe clean. However, they can feel warm to sit on and, in heavy rain, moisture may still creep in through seams or the zipper. Full vinyl encasements can “trap” air and feel balloon-like; a fitted-sheet style with elastic corners avoids that, but seams can still pass a bit of moisture over time or from underneath the mattress.
Best Protection: Layering
Many customers layer a waterproof protector on the mattress first, then add a regular fabric cover or an outdoor fabric cover on top—depending on comfort and exposure. This gives you the protection you need with the look you want.
Budget Tip for Heavy Weather
For serious storms or prolonged exposure, a small, inexpensive tarp secured over the futon frame and mattress can keep a lot of water off. Tuck it under the legs or use bungees to hold it in place. It’s not fancy, but it works.
A Quick Reality Check
No sewn cover is 100% waterproof in all conditions—zippers and seams are never submarine-rated. Choose the balance of comfort, protection, and look that fits how you’ll actually use the futon, and consider layering if you need extra insurance.
