Futon Frame Maintenance Tips

A little preventative maintenance can greatly increase how long your frame lasts. Check the bolts every month or two, depending on usage. Tighten gently if loose, but don’t overtighten. If you have a wooden frame, rub a bar of Ivory soap in the arm tracks now and then to keep things moving smoothly.

Most damage happens when people force a frame that’s stuck. If it won’t convert from bed to sofa (or vice versa), stop, remove the mattress, and check for binding or uneven force. Don’t yank one side harder than the other.

Guests unfamiliar with futon operation often break frames. It’s better to tell them to leave it in the bed position and let you convert it later.

Plastic parts can dry out or wear over time. Loose bolts can lead to shifting and eventual breakage. Some parts are made of plastic to protect the frame — if forced, a metal part could crack the wood instead.
