Anti Allergy
Protect-A-Bed™ Healthy Home Solutions:
Implementing these basic health tips will go a long way to reducing the allergies and other health problems in the home.
Cleaning and airing:
Weekly hot washing (above 54°C / 130°F) of bed linen will kill dust mites. Expose unprotected bedding to direct sun and a breeze for a few hours each week.
Aerate your home:
Avoid the same air circulating through your home's heating and air-conditioning system. Open doors and windows to let fresh air in.
No bedding hand-me downs:
Avoid handing down old, possibly mite-infested mattresses or bedding to other family members, especially children.
Be sensible about pets:
Minimize contact with pets for sensitive people and keep them out of the bedrooms. Wash your pets regularly.
Moulds:
Moulds produce a musty odor and millions of spores which become airborne easily. Treat any mould growth with a bleach solution but be careful not to inhale
fumes.
General Concerns
The Root Cause of Allergies

A speck of dust may contain fabric fibers, human skin scales, animal dander, insect parts, bacteria, moulds, pollens and other organic and synthetic materials. A person may be allergic to one or more of these substances.

Of the many components of house dust, microscopic creatures called house dust mites cause the most trouble. They feed on skin scales and dander shed by humans and are proving to be the major allergen in house dust.

Most recent studies show that as much as 30% of the population are allergic and 80% of allergic asthmatics had a positive skin test to mites.

People become allergic to proteins in mites and mite feces, each mite producing 10-20 waste particles per day. The proteins are so light that they float in the air when disturbed, releasing large amounts of mite proteins, causing some people to have an allergic reaction.

Mites are members of the arachnid family (related to ticks and spiders) and cannot be seen without a microscope. They are hardy and thrive in warm, humid conditions, surviving and multiplying best when relative humidity is 75-80% and the temperature is 20°C or more. The life cycle from egg to adult is 30 days and their numbers reach a peak in mid summer. They love bedding and survive vacuuming because they burrow deep in the bed and pillow fibers and are equipped with sucking, sticking pads on their feet.

Unprotected mattresses

As many as 2 million mites have been counted in unprotected mattresses and it only takes 4 months for an unprotected mattress to become infested.

You lose a liter of body moisture every night, creating a perfect breeding ground in your mattress for bacteria and dust mites. The dust mite is found in every home, particularly in bedding, mattresses and under sheets where they thrive in large numbers.

They eat microscopic flakes of human skin which we shed every night during our sleep.

Your mattress can't be washed, and, if unprotected, its inhabitants and dust can cause various allergies such as asthma, runny nose, watery eyes, morning congestion, eczema and hay fever.
Bed Wetting / Enuresis
Persistent bedwetting / enuresis, creates stress and trauma for both parents and children. Children feel a sense of shame, while many parents feel angry, confused and even assume that they've somehow failed.

Facts to consider:

You're not alone. Each year 5 to 7 million families in the United States and Canada face the same situation.

Nocturnal enuresis effects many age groups. About 1 in 10 six year-old children may wet the bed 3 to 4 nights a week. For some children, the problem continues into puberty.

Statistics show 1 in 5 children will bed wet.

Here are some practical steps to help:

Offer support, not punishment.

Remember that enuresis in involuntary - children don't wet the bed on purpose. Scolding and sarcasm can only be harmful to a child.

Protect your child's bed with a waterproof protector. (Protect-A-Bed offers a comfortable solution with the absorbent toweling surface that you can machine wash and tumble dry).

Ask your child not to drink any liquid 1 hour before bedtime.

Ask your child to urinate every night just before going to bed.

For a sleep over at friends let your child pack his Protect-A-Bed in his/her bag and ask the friends mum to fit it to your child's bed (Just in case. Many children will not sleep over because they are worried they will have an accident).

Urinary Incontinence
Some studies show as many as 1 in 13 adults are incontinent. Urinary incontinence is generally divided into four categories:

STRESS - Loss of urine that occurs when you exert pressure on your bladder by coughing, laughing, jumping or lifting.

URGE - An immediate, strong urge to urinate. You can't hold it long enough to get to the bathroom.

OVERFLOW - An inability to properly empty your bladder, which can cause frequent or constant dribbling or urine.
MIXED - A combination of types. Stress and urge incontinence often occur together, especially in older women.
